You are running your bike 1qt. low...The oil should be checked with engine at normal operating temp. on the side stand.

Whatever you decide to use it will be a total of 7 quarts and you will have leftovers in 1 bottle...
Primary...don't use regular car oil....use ATF, V-twin or primary fluids....Car oil "MIGHT" make you clutch slip....This is if you use your bike like i do...Loaded, Hills, Hard starts....I use car oil in my motor, primary fluids in the primary and gear oil in the tranny...I have also used 20W50 V-twin in all 3 holes and to be honest i couldn't tell the difference at all...50k miles later still sounds the same.

Do what you think is right for your's, after all you do have the heated grips...

BTW: I would rather run a little light than too full of it.

Just trying to help...I guess the owners manual and all of the service manuals are wrong...Being a full qt. light in this heat will lead to premature thermal breakdown of the oil...I guess you save a ton of money running a qt. low...Good luck...The heated grips are great for winter riding my bike rolls year round.

Do you measure the amount of oil that comes out of your bike, and then put the same amount back in that came out?

If not, then you are over filling your crank case, every time. BTW;The OM says 3.5, not 4, but beings how you have heated grips and ride year round, I'm sure you do.

Since this is the 1000 mile check up, I agree that the dealer should perform the service. The rest you can do by yourself but that's not what you asked.

If you only give the dealer six quarts and he says he needs 7, then he might add some Syn 3 to your engine. So don't give the dealer any reason not to use your oil, and ask for the 7th qt back, used or unused.

My owners manual says oil 4qts....The original question in this thread was how much oil should he buy for is bike?...You obviously are not familiar with how to check your own oil and giving incorrect information for the original question.

It's like I said "You're the one with the heated grips".

Look at the bottom of page 1-15 in your 2009 Touring Service Manual and tell me what it says.

What has heated grips have to do with any of this?

I will have to wait until I get to work to look at the service manual.

My owners manual also states 4 qts for the motor. Mine read full at 3.5 when warm and puked some out the filter. With about 3.25 qts in the motor the dipstick reads about 2/3 full and doesn't puke....
If this.. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/gener...tentId=7032644 is the Castrol oil you have, I don't think their would be any issues in your motor and primary. I'd still go 75w-90 or 75w-140 syn for the tranny.
