Default cold vs. hot oil level?

Can anyone explain why my oil level when cold is alittle more than half a quart low, but when I check it hot it is to the full mark. I'm using Amsoil 20-50 motorcycle oil. Does the heat make it rise that much or possibly aeration, but I don't see any bubbles when I check the oil hot.
I only put 3 1/2 qts. in it now so I don't blow it out the breathers, if I put the full 4 qts. in, I'm overfull when hot! Is this normal?

this is way simple. oil expands when it's hot. that's the reason for the instructions in your owners manual for the procedure for checking it hot or cold. there is a difference.

i had a 05 roadking and it wouldnt take 4 qts of oil. 3 1/2 qts was perfect i thought it would take what my 09 SG took. but i was wrong.
