You don't have to go that route unless you insist on using it in any weather conditions. I found a cool chrome handlebar mount and cable from the battery for my Garmin nuvi 750. Just under $200.00 and I am set. As you have a fairing you can get away with more inclement weather use than I can but I am looking to get a detachable fairing down the road.

I use a Nuvi 255 from Costco.com ($149 with free lifetime map updates) a power cord and handle bar mount I got from these guys www.gpscity.com The only problem I have with the unit is it will not (or I just have not figured out how to do it) link up with HDs ride planner. It will d/l from the site but not as a route, it lists each stop as a separate destination and not in the order that I was trying to go.

Garmin Nuvi 855 that I got form Amazon Warehouse Deals for $120.
I downloaded a motorcycle icon for my vehicle icon.
It speaks, control via 4.3" touch screen or you can speak to it to control GPS, MP3 player, audio book player, picture viewer, and etc.
I'm getting a Bluetooth stereo dongle and Bluetooth stereo headset/mic to use it in my helmet.
I tried it's FM transmitter with a small FM stereo receiver and a wireless mic for my video cam, but the FM in the Nuvi is really weak and has too much background noise.
Other than that I really like it.
Tells you want lane you need to be in before you get to the turn, and other similar type of guidance.
For $120 delivered ...... I'm really happy with it.

Gps?
I use the Garmin Zumo 660 and love it. It is on the pricey side but it has been there through lots of rain and some snow without any problems. Tried a TomTom but for me it was terrible (I know some love them, I probably got a bad unit).
If you don't need the weather-proof capability, there are a lot of reasonably priced units. I like Garmin the best but there are others......
