I have a 103 stage II, never lugs at 60mph two up up hills in 6th. With True Duals/Monster Ovals you can barely hear it running. To pass, I can take her down to 3rd, but why? Twist the grip in 5th and I'm at 80 faster than I care to be.
I don't think it's the 96's that love to run, I think it's the riders who love to run. This has been a topic of discussion many times on here. I've talked to several good mechanics about this. Most say with the 09's and newer with the lower gearing, you can safely run in 6th gear at 60 mph. If you start up a steep hill, you might want to shift down to 5th.
I've got the '07 with the taller gearing. Before stage 1 with PCIII, 6th was pretty useless below 70+. But now with a good map from Fuel Moto it is useable down to about 60. I still prefer to run it a little faster, around 2300 to 2500 RPM its good to go.
to many factors to say any speed is right, road conditions, bikes tune, type and condition of fuel etc.... folks that say " if ya run at X you're luggin it" may be right for their bike but not mine or yours.... i often find myself in 6th at 60 mph and even a bit lower and the bike is happy.
follow the manual's recommendations (55MPH) and your own instincts (sound of motor, level ground, etc), the need for acceleration or just cruising, and shift when you think you should. Anywhere from 55 to 75 should be fine. As for me, most of the time it is 55 - 60mph.
At 70mph I am just at 3000rpms in 5th gear, shifting up to 6th drops my rpms to about 2800 with speed now at 75mph or so, rides REAL NICE
