RE: Break in Period
!Hell, ride it like you stole it. Ok, I did the first 100 miles not bringing tach over 3k, did go 4k several times briefly (very briefly). Plus, don't ride at one constant rpm. Just take it easy but don't totally pamper it. Then take it easy for another 400 miles and you should be fine. There is one school of thought to change the oil after the first 50 to get rid of the initial break in contaminants. I did not do this, but maybe the next bike.

RE: Break in Period
H-D says in the owner's manual:
To allow your engine to wear in its critical parts, we recommend that you observe the riding rules provided below for the first 500 miles (800 km.) Adherence to these suggestions will help to assure good future durability and performance.
1) During the first 50 miles (80 km) of riding, keep the engine speed below 4000 rpm in any gear. Do not lug the engine by running or accelerating at very low rpm, or by running at very high rpm longer than needed for shifting or passing.
2) Up to 500 miles (800 km) vary the engine speed & avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long periods. Engine speed up to 5000 rpm in any gear is permissable.
3) Drive slowly and avoid fast starts at wide open throttle until the engine has warmed up.
4) Avoid lugging the engine by not running the engine at very low speeds in higher gears.
5) Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken in for the first 200 miles (300 km.)
Since these are the guys who designed & built your engine, as well as the ones who will be fixing it under warranty if something goes wrong, I'd follow their recommendations.
