Whats the " Normal " break in procedure on the Road King ?
"Normal" break-in would be to follow the manual. I can't agree with those who recommend to "ride it like you stole it" right out of the box. What comes to mind is the fact that I've never seen a recommendation by a vehicle manufacturer to conduct a break-in in this manner. As for the Ntnoa.org article, he makes some statements that are simply false, like "If synthetics are used during initial break in the rings are sure to glaze over." Well, there is a chance they may glaze over, but they're not sure to do so. If they did, you wouldn't see some manufacturers, like HD with their SE line, use synthetic oil as a factory fill. That said, I always use fossil oil for the first 2k miles or so just as a precaution.
My break-in procedure has always been to start fairly easy and gradually approach my normal driving habits over the course of a few K miles, making sure to vary the speeds constantly. Don't ever maintain any constant speed for more than a minute or two, especially for the first few C miles.
I broke mine in following the manual. I found that the manual is pretty liberal regarding top RPMs and speed during break-in, and I rarely exceeded the recommended limits anyway. Not really too much of a sacrifice for a mere 500 miles.
I was told by the sales guy to follow the owners manual but the tech at the HD shop told me that the moters are more than broken in before theyship it and theyinstalled on the bike. Ride it like youstole it bud...........
My dealer said to follow the owner instructions, but that the bike really does not breake in till 5K.
I agree with you about break in. I could smell burnt oil coming from myexhaust when I let off the throttle for the first 4k miles. Got about 6k on it now, no more nasty oil smell from the exhaust. My bike will make me giggle inmy helmet.
