PC-V stupid question
#32
Thank you to ALL who have responded. I got my answer and then some. All info is appreciated from those who have gone before me. Other than a V&H fuel pack, this is my 1st venture into "tuning" and I'll gladly accept all input.
As for my original question, I'll finally get some time today to install the PC-V and FM air cleaner and take it out for a blast and the software will wait for later. I know that once the software is installed that it'll probably become a minor obsession and I'll start messin' with it so I'm going to try to pace myself that way. I've bitten off more than I can chew before and want to take my time with this and just nibble a bit.

Not a dumb question. I thought the same thing until I read an article in Easyriders about this exact subject. The autotune does as its name implies but if you have the bike tuned properly to start then the AT has alot less work to do. You are then only asking for some small changes vice forcing the system to make large reactionary ones. The AT should refine not fix.

OK, I've got a question. I have the PCV,SEAC and FM Dyno Tuned Jackpots, all from FuelMoto.
I assume you're using the AutoTune for your tuning. Is there a way for me to lean/richen my AFR without special equipment? Is there a formula I can use to do this? I do not have AT.

You'll need to connect a computer (i.e. laptop) via USB to the PCV, then launch the software. You'll see the fuel tables, one for each cylinder, so for each table select either FM's range or mine as above, making sure the entire range shows blue on the screen, and hit pg-down five times. That'll reduce fuel in that range 5%. If you want to go 10% leaner hit pg-down five more times.
For those of you who haven't discovered it, the PCV has a unique feature than too few take advantage of. That's the map switch, and with it you can connect any on-off switch and toggle between two maps. You can have one in its original rich condition for those times when you want more cooling, like in heavy summer traffic, and the other for normal running. FWIW, Auto-Tune works different and toggles between the base map (open loop) and "leaning mode" (closed-loop, auto-tune).

Don't want to jump in here and hijack but while everyone's talking about PCV I have a question. I added a PCV w/AT on my 09' during my build and honestly had problems at first but with the help of a forum member I got things straightened out. My bike now runs excellent, no popping, pinging, and seems to run cool although it rarely gets over 90 degrees where I live. My question is that even though I think my bike is running about as good as it will, 43mpg on a 103" with cams & +4 cam gear, would a dyno tune have any benefit to me at this point? I just don't want to find out down the road that a dyno tune would've made another night and day difference.

Well the PC-V is finally installed along with the FM air cleaner and some new plugs and wires just for good measure. As it turns out, I am going to need the software sooner than expected. The bike ran very strong and very smooth. It was more responsive than before and so far I like it. I know I'll like it even more after I contact Jamie or Kieth and get some advice or a new map to cure the roll-on ping. Light acceleration, light ping for only a second and with heavy acceleration a very loud ping or 2. I mean really loud like a stone came loose from the tire and whacked the inside of the fender. Both situations are very brief but it really got my attention quick.
I've done some forum searches on the subject and found others who've had similar experiences and were given new maps or instructions for timing adjustments by FM. I know iclick has been helpful with others on the subject and I'm sure in a couple of days all be well.
So I guess I'll be starting down the long, twisted tuning road a little sooner than I thought. Hopefully it won't be too bad.
Thanks again for all the info.

I installed a PCV on my 08 Ultra about three weeks ago. I ran into the same problem, no room. I called Kieth and he said they just lay the connector on top of the ECU and tuck the PCV up on the fender under the brace. Worked well.

I just installed mine 2 weeks ago and love it the only issue I had was an intermittent shut down of my Cruise Control. Jamie emailed me the cure, now I love the thing. First thing for me was to pull lowers for the summer, it allowed so much more air, i also installed an oil cooler and one of Captn. Itchs crotch coolers and can now ride in the Arizona heat 110-114 with out burning up. It was straight forward Plug and Play.
