Default Replacing starter under warranty.....question

The starter in my '09 Ultra Classic is soon to be replaced under warranty and I've got a question for you guys.

I happened to have a new chrome Harley 1.4kw starter, 31621-06A that I was going to put on my '07 Road King Classic. After talking with the service manager, they have agreeded to mount the chrome starter but want me to understand that it no longer has a warranty. They will also go ahead and order a new stock Black starter and give it to me if I decide to have them mount the chrome starter. All of this will be covered under warranty.

If I decide to let them mount a stock Black starter, it will only be covered under warranty as long as my remaining warranty on the scoot is, which is March of 2011.

Keeping in mind the difference in the starters, which one would you guys put on? This chrome starter isn't doing me any good in the box.

Where's the problem? Mount the chrome. They're giving you a new black starter as a spare. I'm sure they'll last a lot longer than the warranty.

I would have the chrome starter installed.

One month ago while on a ride, the starter was trying to engaging while the engine was running. About every 15 seconds I could heard this awful grinding sound. After getting the scoot to the dealers, they found the starter switch had shorted and caused the problem. I ask about the starter at that time but it seem to starter ok and no longer making the noise after they replaced the starter switch. Now it's the starter itself that's getting replaced.

I think I'll take the advice and have them install the chrome starter.

Just had a new starter put on my 09 with 37k...started acting up with only 2 weeks left under warranty...I would put the chrome one on and keep the other for a spare or sell it.....my 2 cents

Since they are giving you the black stock one as a spare, go the chrome route.

I agree with replacing with the chrome if know it to be good .. Would definitely keep the other for a spare though so nothing comes back to haunt you .. Starters have a shelf life for years if properly sealed and stored..

I'm surprised they even offer a warranty on an electrical component. Something smells fishy.

I had one of the infamous 2007 starters. I let that baby go too long and it cost me a new ring gear. Which, BTW is a single part number from HD up here - you have to buy the whole damned clutch basket. I had my indy rebuild my old starter for me.

The story I got was that HD didn't fix the cause of the bad starters in 2007, but they'd replace them. Great, so you get a brand new POS starter. I thought the problem was fixed, but my buddy's 2009 Glide is starting to exhibit starter problems.
