Default mid frame air deflectors - thumbs down

Just want to let folks know in case they decide to go this route.

The harley mid frame air deflectors are advertised in the keeping cool brochure as an item that will keep your rider comfortable by deflecting heat away from them.

well, they give you plenty of hard ware depending on your year bike differnt hardware kits are needed....all included.

so the things would be a breeze to install if the engine was not in....but my engine is in. There are basically 3 sets of screw washers assemblies and a clip[ of a 07 install. On the right side the lower screw washer nut assembly goes in pretty easy. You can forget about installing the top screw washer assembly, the engine is in the way. i used a large tie wrap to secure the top section down from the inside so you cant see the tie wrap. On the left side, the top screw washer assembly goes in pretty easy, but the lower clip is a one shot deal....meaning...try to install it once..and it shoots off some where in the engine never to be seen again. same solution...large tie wrap from the inside so you cant see it.

well does it work...heck no. the mid frame covers do nothing for the blistering heat that comes off that crossover exhaust tube.

my next solution will be to install a rear passenger floor board extension kit so that my passengers legs are a little furthur away from the exhaust system.

ride safe.

I didn't have them on my '03 Ultra Classic but I do on my '09 and I really like them. Of course the cross-over pipe is in a different place.

Soos' Floorboard extensions will help get the feet away from the heat. I have them and love them. http://www.mike5959.com/Soos/productshdf.html

You might also want to look into a tuner so the engine runs cooler. Harley has them running very lean from the factory.

You've got to get rid of that goofy h pipe. I put the fullsac conversion on my bike earlier this year, and it significantly reduced the heat baking my right thigh. I liked it well enough to go to a Rinehart true dual system. Big difference from the stock system. There's still a little heat, but it's bearable right now in the full heat of summer, and it's downright comfortable during the other seasons.

I have the mid-frame deflectors on my '08 and they work well to deflect the heat from both sides. As for install, my wife has little fingers so she was in-charge of getting the screws and brackets in place. Wasn't easy but well worth the effort.

+1 on the SooS floorboard extensions!!!!

I did NOT have them on my 02, and in stop-n-go traffic, the heat coming up fried the inside of my things.

The 2010 DOES have them....and I don't notice much heat at ALL coming up, and the bike is stock so far.

Is this drop in perceived heat from the heat deflectors, or from the re-designed exhaust? I think it is a mix of the two, with the majority of that reduction in heat being from the change in exhaust routing.

Now if HD could do something about the heat pouring off of that catalytic convertor right next to the trans !!!

I just installed them last week on my '06. I have small hands so there wasnt too much cussin durin the install. As for the tight bolt locations, a ball ended allen key did the trick for me. I did end up losing the lower left mounting clip somewhere and used double sided tape. Rode for about 2 hours with them on and they seem to work ok.

My '08 frame is the same as the '07 and I had little difficulty installing the deflectors and they made a big difference in heat on my legs. I don't know what the difference in yours is.

My passenger/G/friend was happy when I installed the frame air deflectors. I will add,
that I also afterwards installed the passenger floorboard spacers....and before those two
mods...I installed a 'crossover pipe' removal kit. The frame deflectors made the most differance. The crossover pipe removal next.....and the floorboard spacer helped with leg placement/riding comfort.
I have an '04. Glad to see the Company caught wind og our complaints....a little.
