Will2002 - I have the 07-08-09 and two 2010's in my collection. None of them has had a heat issue. The 07 is the TC96 as is the 2010 Super Glide and 2010 Ultra.
The 08 and earlier touring models had a heat issue with the routing of the exhaust pipe and not heat from the engine. That was corrected with the 09 touring bikes.
FLS2FLH --I have a life long history off telling it like it is without sugar coating.
If the three TC96 engines that I have do not have heat issues on the many long distance rides that I do each year and they are box stock and since I'm cheap I use 89 octane for better mileage then most of the complainers are just not accurate in their observations.

Nice ride, but the stock '10 head pipe is a heat monster, glad you didn't have the issue.
I put a '10 on my bike because it has 2-1 bags, that damn pipe overheated my motor and caused a oil leak by the head gasket. Switched pipes to a supertrapp and changed the gasket and now I have no issues.
BTW, I had no issue with the stock '09 pipe but the '10 is clogged with cats.

now that sounds like a great ride you guys had. i agree with you about the heat from the engine being a non issue. i'll catch up with you in about 12 years as i'm 58. i know that trip you took would have worn me out. congratulations on creating a great memory with your sons. you're a very lucky man indeed.

Could you explain that procedure in more detail? All I can do with the throttle is enable/disable the EITMS with the engine off. Are you saying you can actually turn off the rear cylinder by turning the throttle forward? Is this capability new on the '10s?
