We had a new kitchen fitted a couple of years ago, with several new appliances. As their warranties ran out we were encouraged to take up extended ones for each of them. The cost would have been more than buying a new one every year! We recently ordered a new car and are being bombarded with several extras, to insure against various possible disasters not covered by the warranty, that remind me of the kitchen experience. If you pay for these things it definitely costs you. If you don't buy them, you may save something. I have only once in over 40 years been hit by a serious bill on a vehicle that might have been covered by an extended warranty.

These are the prices I was quoted. It's for a time period and didnt mention anything about a mile limit:

2 years = $859
3 years = $1,109
4 years = $1,359
5 years = $1,609

Beyond simple fluid changes Im not a wrench. This is my first Harley and rightly/wrongly the reputation isnt that great putting lots of miles on these bikes. The dealer will argue that the cost will cover one single large repair but I dont know if there are many people getting hit wit $1,000 repair bills. On my BMW with all the techno gizmo's hitting the $1k mark isnt hard to do. My Guzzi's cost me nothing but oil changes but like Harley its a simple engine proven over time.

For guys with higher milage and bikes older than 3 years old... what kind of repair are you getting hit with.

I just picked up a 2010 ultra, traded my 08 fat boy in on it. also added the 5 year warranty and tire and rim. The way i see it is a few tires changes will pay for the warranty, or rim damage. for the heat these 10 generate i think the warranty will be money in the bank.

The best thing to do is do your research and make an informed decision, I'm talking research beyond the forum. I think you'll find most experts will tell you extended warranties are not a good buy, there are better options as some have said.

You'd need to have a crystal ball to tell you if it's worth it. It comes down to gambling, if you buy it and something major goes wrong then you win, if nothing goes wrong then you lose. I had the 5yr warranty on my '03 ultra and never used it, the cost was aroung $1600, so I lost the bet and the warranty company made some money. I don't think I'll put one on the '10 limited.

When I bought my 2000 FLHTPI it was traded in by a local PD for a newer model. I never purchased an extended warranty previously, but since this was a used bike that I could not vouch for with certainty, I decided to buy the ESP for 3 years. In 2007, it spun an inner cam bearing and took out the motor. ESP covered the repairs including new engine cases, valves, cams, oil pump, cam support plate, almost a new motor. No questions asked. in 2008, my ECM took a dive as did the cam position sensor, all paid for by the ESP. A few days before it expired, I opted to renew it for 5 more years. So basically, I have an extended warranty on the bike that does not expire until June of 2014. Essentially a 14 year long bike warranty. So in my case, it WAY more than paid for itself.

BTW, all my ESP covered warranty repair work was done not at a Harley dealership, but at a local Indy shop that honored the ESP.

I just bought a 2010 Ultra Limited, and I paid $799 for the 5 year warranty, with a stated price of $1,600. So, polish up your negotiation skills!

Anyone know if the seat is covered under the ESP? Mine's an 08 UC and the stitching is fine, just the cover is stretching apart where the stitching is.

Called the dealer today and taking in for a look tomorrow. He immediately jumped to, "If it's the stitching, it's not covered." I told him the stitching was fine, but the seat cover was stretching away from the stitching.
