Cowboy boots with rubber soles are ok, you won't slip out at an intersection. However in a fairly bad accident they will come off your feet quickly I imagine,, then your foot is exposed to more injury than necessary. Lace up boots supply the best protection for an accident....


That said, I do wear my "Corner Cockroach Killers" quite often on my bike rides too! But that's always in the back of my mind.
Being employed at a US AFB, they have requirements to get on base with your bike. Tennis shoes are a no-no for sure. Along with short sleeves and short pants. You have to wear gloves/leather. Thank goodness it doesn't state LACE UP boots. Because I have rode on with my cowboy boots a few times while in Civies. But for the reasons they WANT you in ankle high boots, the cowboy ones do not suffice.

They feel like they have to protect their young active duty airmen, since they are GOVT PROPERTY for 4-6 years! LOL Being civilian during the week, but I still wear the uniform... the rules apply to anyone riding on base.
