Those that know the physics behind motorcycles and traction would see what's wrong about using car tires on motorcycles. One of the most important factors of traction on motorcycles is the contact patch. A motorcycle tire is designed to give you maximum contact patch for various driving conditions...such as leaning. GP bikes prove this on the track. There's a reason for the names..."Car tire" "motorcycle tire". Two different animals.
Well said! I suspect if we put this topic to a car tyre specialist and a motorcycle tyre specialist they would both throw their hands up in despair.
The nay sayers never tried and the ones that tried say they'll never go back...just have to pick a side I guess. I have about 5k miles left in my rear tire then I'm flipping to the darkside....I'll be posting my experiances as I go...If you want to wait I'll be switching this fall and I get about 20k out of my back tire now so I'm thinking 45k out of the auto rear...but I ride mostly highway
Every time this comes up I can't believe the amount of people with $20K bikes trying to save a couple hundred dollars or less a year on tire replacement cost. When that car tire leans in a curve it loses about 75% of it's contact patch & it might feel fine until you have to make an emergency maneuver where you need every ounce of traction to avoid going down. I'm not willing to risk life on some fools advice just to save a few $.
I'm going to a car tire when it is time for a replacement. It's not about cost for me, I just need to see for myself and then I'll make a final decision.

I don't know where your getting the 75% loss of contact patch info but everyone who has made the switch has claimed better traction and better braking...Like I said in my earlier post the nay sayers are sitting on a bench saying it can't be done as people are riding by doing it...Also the reason people are switching is because more R&D goes automobile tires and they are much better products...Bike tires are still mostly the same as my Dad's generation rode on...We(bike riders) don't make up enough of the population to warrent the money they spend on R&D for car tires if you want a better product you have to get it...Because they are not going to make it for us...and you don't need to look any further than Dunlop for that...Oh a problem with the 407's we'll just flip them and rename them 408 perfect...Sorry friend but the Emperor Wears No Clothes and I'm shouting it from the rooftops...They tell you it's better and safer because it's designed for you bike and you'll gobble them up at the inflated price but your paying for twenty+ year old technology...
I met a guy who has an 09 police bike and he is running a car tire on the rear. He says it takes about an hr. to get use to it but says it's great !!! He knows it will get 35,000 miles from past experience. (tire has plenty of room) The tire size is 185/55/16 dunlop. Looks really nice on the bike. Cost was 85.00 dollars. Question is!!! Has anyone tried this yet ??? any comments pos. or neg. ??
Yep. Lots of threads on it. Wide Tire Softail's and 09-newer touring HD's can do this now with no worries except for who is going to mount it. I do it myself 'cause it's a piece of cake to do and balance them with Dyna Beads.
Although the cost savings can be up to $1500 and it is factor for me; I'd still run the CT even if it wasn't because they just plain work better.

I like this answer.
Let us know how it works out .
...Bike tires are still mostly the same as my Dad's generation rode on...We(bike riders) don't make up enough of the population to warrent the money they spend on R&D for car tires if you want a better product you have to get it...
That is just so much b0ll0cks it is not worth commenting on!
