Default Is this just my dealer or is it HD wide?

This following dialog still does not make any sense to me, if this is HD wide I'm a very happy camper.

Me (talking to the parts guy I've dealt with for three years): I need a price on this: Show him my piece of paper with "HD-44060A" written on it (Wheel bearing Removal/Install Tool).

Parts Guy (PG): Oh it's a Harley tool I can't sell that to you.
Me: What?
PG: Harley tool I can't sell it to you, only to the service department.
ME: That doesn't make any sense I got the number out of the service manual where it said to use this part to remove bearing.
PG: That's because usually only the Service Departments buy the manual.
PG: Let's see if the SE catalog has one I can sell you.
PG: Here's one it's $290.00.
Me: That's ok there are hydraulaic presses at my work, thanks anyway.

Has anybody else hear of this? Whats the use of getting a shop manual if they won't sell you the tools to do the job? I'm not really happy about this right now.

I looked to buy the tool to remove the ignition on a FLHX, they wanted 300.00. We took a 12 inch piece of old copper pressed it and ground it to work.

Bottom line is that the moco and dealers prefer we pay them to do the work...

Same happened to me 5 or 6 yrs. ago. My 97 FLHRI that I just purchased used
would sometime sit at a red light and race the engine 3 or 4K. And everyone
would look at the idiot on the HD race his engine till the light changed..
So I got the diag. reader out of the HD book, HD 41197 and called my local
stealer, South Side, V Beach. "OH THAT IS A DEALER ITEM, WE CANT SELL
THAT TO YOU!" What the fork????
So I called Bay Side, expecting the same......NO they could order it for 50.00
and I had it in a wk.,, code said head temp sensor... $100. later all was well.
Just another reason I try to stay away from the stealer, BA$TORD.........Tenn.

My dealer won't sell Harley specific tools to a customer.

I've had my dealer check harley tools, and then sell me tools from Jim's for half the price. They will sell you anything.

If your still looking for a wheel bearing install/removal tool, I bought this one.

Works like the one from Georges garage, but $70 cheaper. Used it on my OEM 09' wheels and it worked like a charm.

Nate

PS I've run up on that "dealer only" crap too, and if they will sell it to you, it's special order deal, and takes 6 to 8 weeks which turns into 10 or 12 weeks. High priced, long wait so yea they do want you to have them do the work, and again high priced and long wait, go figure.

Have heard this is common practice with dealers but in the past, some have posted some dealers that will sell HD service tools. My dealer wont also.
