Default Pinched Oil Seal

I brought my 06 Ultra in for the 1000 mile checkup Wednesday and was supposed to pick it up this morning. I was advised this morning that the mechanic went to test drive it and brought it back in saying the bike had a problem as it didn't have the appropriate power. I had traded a 06 Street Glide on the Ultra and thought the Ultra felt sluggish but also thought it was heaver than the Glide. I had mentioned this to the dealer when I brought it in. I am not mechanically inclined and do not totally understand what has occurred but will try to describe what I was told. They feel my bike has a pinched oil seal. The pinched seal keeps oil in the sump which causes the flywheel to not turn as freely as it should (oil cavitation)????? They plan on calling HD and are going to go into the oil pump area Monday morning. They said they will check the entire engine out including looking for a scored oil pump. I asked about the rest of the engine as to oil getting to the upper parts. They felt the upper end was fine but wouldn't know until they get into it. My question - Will this type of problem cause damage to other areas of the engine that may show up later rather than now? If all of the oil did not empty when they drained the original oil and the new oil was added, did or will that cause future problems (They advised that the oil was drained and new oil added. After the test ride they found that my bike had too much oil in it. They drained the oil again and found it still had oil in the sump)? Cut me slack if this doesn't make sense as this is way over my head. I would appreciate any help on this matter. Also have another question concerning true duals and HD Race Tunner but will post seperately.

The oil system on you bike is a "Dry Sump" system. The oil pump has two sides to it. It has a pressure side which supplies oil to lubricate the bearings ect. and a scavagen side which picks up oil from the bottom of the crankcase and sends it through the oil filter and then to the oil supply tank, from which the pressure pump is feed. There is about a quart of oil left in the engine when it is serviced. If you have a restriction in the oil return side, there may have been more oil in the crankcase than normal. This is where it gets wierd. I don't think a simple pinched seal would cause this problem. If they drained the oil out of the supply tank (part of the transmission on your bike) and the engine had more than it's normal level in the crankcase because of a pinched seal, my guess they think it is a restricted return path from the scavange pump, then why did the volume increase? Would not the restriction and level remain constant? I'm guessing there is a problem in the scavange pump. Not returning the oil as it should, or maybe a problem with the pick-up screen, like it has a blocked entrance.

The oil in the sump could cause the engine to be sluggish as the flywheels woud have to overcome the friction of turning in the oil that ain't s'posed to be there. The top end would still be getting enough oil, so unless something from the oil pump went through the motor, there shouldn't be a problem. They said they'd check it out, and since it's a warranty claim it'll be free, whatever they find.

They'll have to change the oil again when they do the work, so don't worry about what little bit of old oil might be left after two changes.

Default RE: Pinched Oil Seal

there are three o-rings concerning the oil pump...one of them seal the crankcase...if it is pinched(common) or broken, or shrunk up...it will cause oil to enter the crank and cause windage....or drag the crank wheels robbing power....it is not a hard fix for someone mechanical and the o-ring is a buck...its called "SUMPIN".....the old time gearheads know of it well...theyll warranty it and take acoupla hours to fix
