Default How to tighten handle bars on Electra Glide Classic

I had 16" apes installed and everything is fine so far except I can pull on the bars and they come back toward me. I can push them back in place but I'd rather be able to snug them back tighter so they stay put. Anyone know how to do it? It looks like if I can get the ignition switch off I could get to them. thanks, Jim

Jim:

While your in there, upgrade to the 1-piece top clamp that's superior in rigidity and clamping force:

H-D #55918-08

Remove the ignition switch and then the switch cap. This will expose the rear screws for the handlebar clamp. If they are not already tightened to the max, then tighten them. Otherwise, you will have to do the additional steps of removing the outer fairing and the radio as indicated by a previous poster.

Not sure what year Moco replaced the two piece clamps with the one piece. I just installed 16" apes on my 2010 EGC today and it already had the one piece clamp on it. I had 13" on my 05 with the two piece and never had any probs at all. As long as you get them tight from the getgo, its not a prob.

I changed my '05 to the 1 piece when I put the sweepers on. I think the MoCo changed in '06 or '07.

08 was the first year stock with the one piece top clamp.
