Default Nebraska road info needed

I'm planning to head west through Neb. and take Hwy.#2 west from Grand Island connecting to Hwy. 27 north and #20 west, on my way to Yellowstone. I could just stay on the interstate (80) but prefer to stay on the less traveled roads. Anyone done these roads?

Avoid Nebraska would be my advice!!!

Sorry, i don't know the roads, but staying off 80 is a good choice. Not only because of traffic, but there is nothing to look at. Maybe the highways will have some better sights.

But seriously, if you can stay out of Nebraska, consider that. For real.

Yes theres not to much to see here in NE but if you have to come thourgh I would take Hwy. 2 to Hwy 83N thourgh Valentine and then to Hwy 18W in SD much better scenery in SW SD than NW NE. You will also need a helmet in this damn state.

I disagree. The sandhills are something you'll never see anywhere else and the Pine Ridge area (just a little further west near Chadron) is very pretty. I'm out deer hunting near Mullen on HWY 2 every fall. Enjoy the light traffic!

I went through Neb on the way back from sturgis 2 years ago. I remember it was 115 degrees and was like riding through Hell. It is a pretty state except for the unusual heat in Aug. I always stay off the freeways and stick to state highways and 2 lane roads unless impossible. I use Google maps. you can go to the route options and tell it to avoid interstates and tolls

The road you have chosen is about as scenic as you will get in Nebraska, but an alternate would be to follow Highway two all the way to Crawford, where Fort Robinson is located and then on north to Custer in South Dakota. Needles highway in Southeast South Dakota should definitely be on your list of rides if at all possible. wife and I camped that area last year going up from South Central Nebraska and Son and I just completed and Iron Butt ride in that area Father's day weekend.

This site has maps, video, and background info on the routes thru our state. I use it when looking for an overnight run.
