Well, I'll give it a shot. I live in SD and hit Sturgis every year. If I understand, you are looking for some stuff to do. If looking for cheap stuff to do on the bike, hit the ride to Devils Tower in WY and stop at Hewlitt *no panties Thursday* along the way. Ride out of Sturgis along Van Knocker through the canyon up to Nemo. Awesome ride. Hit Spearfish Canyon and bring your camera for the pull offs along the road and shoot the waterfalls coming from the rocks. Stop at Rufflock Falls and check that out. Hit the night lighting ceremony at Mt. Rushmore, its a must do/see at night. Ride Needles Highway. Make the ride through Custer State Park and take the wild animal route. Take the 1880 train ride from Keystone to Hill City and back, its pretty country by train. Ride the pigtails and see Mt. Rushmore through the cave/tunnel *hostspot for pictures, but be careful as traffic is heavy. Ride Needles Highway. Go see Lake Pactola and stop at the visitor's center. Check out Sylvan Lake. Stop to see Crazy Horse monument under construction and take in the Native American culture. These places will give you the best parts of the Black Hills. I could go on. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more.

The best time to see Sturgis and the area is when the bike rally isn't there. It is also the best time to take a 10 year old, IMO.

A lot will have to do with the values you have taught your son.....
I took our 10 year old son to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, complete
with pot smoking beside us and bare-breasted women most every
direction you turned.

Occasionally we will talk about the fun he had with Dad at the concert,
along with the scenery and smell !!!!!!
I wouldn't trade that memory for anything.

Enjoy the surrounding scenery, and maybe be gentle on the sights he
observes at the rally.

X 100 !!!!! And the Brandon Exit (Eastern SD) as the cheapest gas in S.D.!!!..avoid filling up in Sturgis..Locals use Piedmont or rapid city...etc..

Very true. Riding to the hills for that reason with my wife and a few other couples and friends this weekend for that exact reason. Then, back to Sturgis in August.

He would probably enjoy the harley davidson display in rapid city at the civic center (or whatever its called) Of cource there is rushmore, badlands, etc. You can take a ride out to wyoming and check out devils tour.

I really enjoy sitting on main street at night and watching all the characters that are wondering around sturgis.

Sturgis is something everyone shoud experience. Me personally, I'm ready to get out of there after a few days.

maybe a bird and the bee's and **** talk before you take the young one .there are other things out in the sturgis area to enjoy .just have fun for christ sake.it really is an experience everyone should see at least once in there life.ride safe

You're the father, it's your call if you want to expose your 10-year old to the goings-on in Sturgis. As mentioned, there's Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Lead/Deadwood (old mining towns), Custer State Park (show the boy some bison), Crazy Horse, Hill City, a bunch of touristy crap between Hill City and Rapid City.

Sounds like fun. My 3 sons are older and I wish they had bikes to experience this stuff with me.
