Default Speaker attatchment to rear pods

The other night when I stopped for fuel, I found my left rear speaker sitting on the seat behind me. 1 screw, speaker grill w/rubber grommet still attached to speaker wire. 1 rubber grommet still in pod. 3 screws and 2 grommets MIA. Is this common? Has anyone had this happen and has anyone come up with a better way to secure speaker to pod, other than the push in rubber grommets? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks,

Nate

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POST...................

I found these on E-bay. They are almost identical to the original wellnuts in the speaker pods. They are a little longer overall, the barrel is thicker than the original, the head end is about twice as thick. I inserted them from the inside of the pod instead of from the outside in, like the original. I used a lock washer on the wellnut when inserting. Since they were longer, they allowed for the washer as back up. Since the barrel is thicker they were not easy to insert. I found by placing the wellnut in position and then threaded the screw into the nut a few turns and used the screw to pull the nuts into place. I also found getting the screws started when installing speakers and grills was much easier. When tightening the screws I could bear down on the screw to get it very tight and knew I wasn't pulling the wellnut out. They tightened up like any other screw and you could feel they were tight. I have been running them for nearly 2 weeks and so far so good. $6.00 for 12 wellnuts, had enough for both speakers and a few spares. I know others have had luck with other types of fasteners, c-clips etc, this is what I came up with and I think the problem is solved.

The HogTunes kit uses three nuts and bolts to secure the pods to the Tour Pak. I loc-tited mine to keep 'em on. It's a Harley after all...

Thanks, I used the screws when I installed the rear Hog Tunes speakers. My problem I beleive is the grommets pulled out of the pod. The pod never came loose only the speaker. I wasn't talking about the 3 bolts that attatch the pod itself to the tour-pac, just the 4 screws that hold the speaker and grill to the pod. Thanks again,

Nate

I'm sorry I didn't read it properly. I had a hell of a time getting the screws into those grommets when I installed mine. I need to think of a better way to mount them. Perhaps a slip on bolt.

Too funny just the other day this happened to me also! I was not so lucky my J&M speaker was flip out of the pod riding on top of my saddles bag. I had be riding alone trucking down the freeway so the top of my bag is all scratched up. All of the grill screws and rubber grommits were all there. They had just poped out! Think I am going to try to figure out a way to bolt them in or use some silicone around the back of the speaker. I was so pissed but at least I still have the speaker.

No problem. I was thinking of using those c-clip type nuts as well. Not sure if with a nut that size would give enough reach to get to the center of the hole. Haven't checked that out, but intend to. In any case will post back with what I come up with or maybe someone else has an idea. I was lucky I guess, to have only lost the hardware and not the speaker itself. I was wondering too, if maybe the added weight of the Hog-tunes speaker may have contributed to the problem. In any case a better way to secure the speaker is needed. Thanks again,

Nate

I will look for some of whatever these are called. Pardon my not-quite-AutoCAD rendering.

Well at least I don't feel all alone now, sorry about the bag tops. Mine didn't get that far. The 1 screw and grommet kept the grill, screen and speaker together and was just sitting there on the seat. I did notice when doing the speaker change, that if you try to over tighten those screws it just pulls the grommets out. First attempt thought I had the unit all tight and then I just pulled at the speaker to check and I had the speaker grill , screws and grommets all tight but the screws had just pulled the grommets out. Maybe I, or someone else will come up with a better system. Thanks for the input.

Yup!! them are the critters I was thinking of too. My only concern was the distance from the inside of the c-shape to the center of the bolt hole will allow the bolt hole to be where it needs to be. On the same page anyway, thanks
