Default Question on Rear Air Shock Removal

I'm removing my rear air shocks to install some progressive shocks. Question I have is in the service manual, says to never lay shocks on its side with the air line removed as oil could leak out, shocks must be stored upright (vertical). Really? So I have to store the shocks upright? Is there a way to capp off the air valve in the shocks so I don't have to store them vertically? Could I just remove the shocks, reattach the air lines and pump some air into them and then lay them on their sides?

That's quite right! I took off my old shocks, intending to throw them away, and laid them down. They both leaked oil, which I did not intend. So if you want to reuse them or sell them on, find a way of sealing them, or join them back together with the air line, so they can't leak, but don't let oil pass from one into the other.

Get two 1/8th NPT (national pipe thread) Plugs and remove the air fitting and plug them.

that's a pretty good idea. but i guess the whole idea of this is that i'm sure if i were going to buy new shocks at the dealer, i bet they are lying horizontal on the shelves. i think i'll get that fitting and seal them or reconnect the air lines and pump some air into them.

I'm so dumb. Took my stockers off and laid them on top of my Mesa Boogie Bass Amplifier which is sitting in the garage. You can figure out the rest.

Holy old thread Batman!!!

For anyone just looking at this...

Putting pressure in the shocks will not stop them from leaking... the oil can still run into the hose... unless you use Schrader valves... then you still wouldn't need pressure.

Plug them, you're fine...

When i took mine off i stood them up one fell over and i didnt bother with it until i noticed oil leakin out. I dont think its a big deal. Just gotta drain as much oil out as possible and refil it to suggested level. Hopefully i remember that if i ever go to put them back on.
