LA area independant shops??

For performance enhancement or customization work, I strongly recommend Baggers Ink in San Diego. Even though they are in SD, they may come trailer your bike for a nominal fee--they did for me. Their website is at baggersink.com. Phone 619-247-4942. Talk to Pat, the co-owner. Tell him Mike from Malibu recommended them.
In Los Angeles, you can try Dr. V-Twin, a sponsor to this site. They are great for good rates on parts and some mechanical work. Not sure how extensive their mechanical/performance enhancement business comprises.

OP, a few thoughts:
Your profile leaves out location; L.A. area is huge, so it might benefit you to be more specific.
Also you might get a better response if everyone knew what "some work" means to you.
I'm on the west side, Venice, where land ends. It would be helpful for me to know who the good guys are, nearby. There must be some good ones who are a convenient drop-off distance away. Although I intend to do my own basic maintenance, there's always stuff you need help with, and lots of stuff an expert can do better. And I'm not setup to change tires and the like, yet.
