Default Is 35MPG horrible, considering?

Just want to check in to see if the 35 mpg that I get is horrible or acceptable.

I have a 2009 Road King Classic. Stage 1 with SE air cleaner, V&H slip-on's, and a Fuelmoto-tuned PCV. I have no idea what mpg I was getting before the stage 1, as I never bothered to check it.

When I first got my tune from FM, I was still getting a little pinging, even with no timing advance. So Jamie richened it up just a tad (3%-5%, depending on TP and RPM). I've ran 2 tanks of 91 octane through it so far, and got just a tad over 35mpg each time.

I weigh about 290lbs. I ride my bike daily to work. One way is about 25 miles, half of which is city and half of which is 72-75mph on the highway.

On both tanks, I also had about 90 miles worth of 2-up with my wife on the highway, again about 72-75mph.

I wouldn't characterize my riding style as agressive, nor as a "sunday driver". I like to keep up with traffic.

Overall bike seems to be running good. No more pinging. Plugs and pipes look good (no soot or wetness).

What do you think?

Way low.

I ran 350 miles Sunday, the tank I checked was 43mpg, in the mountains with lots of aggresive riding and passing.

96 ci, 255's, Road Rage, SERT, 250 lbs and a base map I built 2 years ago, no tuning.

I seen as much as 48 out on the highway pushing 85-90 all day!

Then what the heck is the problem with my bike? Going just a little leaner induces pinging.

Are you running it at high RPMs?

I noticed mine gets in the 40mpg range if i run 65-75 in 5th gear, but in 6th gear it drops into the 35+ range per gallon...6th gear running 75-80+ it jumps back up into the 40+ mpg range...it likes the higher RPMs, i would imagine its actually not working as hard there to maintain speed.
Really you need to just take time to drive it in different ways each tank and see where it likes to run.

Yup, tried that too. The original tune from FM had 3 degrees of timing added for much of the range. That too produced pinging. Even 1 degree of added timing had some pinging... So the solution was to zero out all timing adjustment below 80% TP.

From speaking to Keith and Jamie at FM, they said that is a common problem for those of us who can't get 93+ octane fuel.

Thanks for your responses hog-doc. Appreciate it.

I usually shift into 6th at 65-70mph. Not sure about the pre-09's...but they say that the 6th gear ratio is better for the 2009 models.

Try running a tank at 65-70 in 5th gear and see what that does for you, id be willing to bet your MPGs improve some. Also ill add this, I never hit 6th gear until i get to 75mph.

Running nothing but a stage 1, D&D the boss pipes, SE AC, tuned with TTS and running twisties hard or freeway at 80mph in 6th and I average around 44mpg on an 09 SG.

You can remove timing also! The table is the base line for the cal your running, you can go up or down from there.
