Riding Hawaii
#12
I was in Maui with my family last year and rented a Streetglide. I rode the entire road around Maui with my 12 year old son and there is nothing like it anywhere on this planet. Just be careful of the cagers and the guy in the middle of the road in Wailuku selling chilled coconut and pineapple. Pick up a loaf of Julia's banana bread in Kahakuloa village. Can miss the "green hut".

no matter which island you ride on - dont expect to go more that about 40 mph. Its insane.

Lots of rental companies in Maui (and Oahu). I've seen Harley rentals on Kihei and Lahaina (towns); plus a Harley dealership in Kahului (where the airport is). While in Maui, check out the kite surfers on Hookipa beach, the Paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) in Makawao, the Tedeschi Winery in the upcountry, go ATV'ing in the Ulupalakua Ranch on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano. Backcountry roads are narrow, slippery and full of tourists in rental cars, so ride relatively slow and safely.

$130/day rental on a touring bike.
3 days to get around that island? Sheesh...doing 10 mph maybe. That place is dinky, but beautiful.
Don't go if you're like us and enjoy activity based vacations. That place is on a clock of its own, and besides luau's, snorkeling, zip lining, and maybe a zodiak tour of the Napoli Coast, there's not a whole lot to keep your attention/keep you active/occupied.
We had a nice time getting to explore a new place, but there are far better places to vacation if you ask me.
Good luck, and enjoy it if you decide to go to Kauai.

Thanks again everybody, for all the replies. I lived on Oahu when I was a kid for 3 years, right after it became a state and I've wanted to go back ever since. While there, we never did explore any of the other islands because Mom was worried about us being made into soup and eaten if we wandered off Oahu. So, I'm not too interested in Oahu now because it is so much more congested (I've heard), but would love to see the others now and get at least a day ride in!
Yes there may be other places better to vacation but this is mainly about me and the wife so believe me there will be plenty to see and do!

I rented a 07 Street Glide in Maui in June 07 for a week put 620 miles on it rode the whole island in fig 8. Slow going but that's ok you want to enjoy the scenery.Pack some rain gear there is a rain forest in Hana area very pretty don't miss it,rode to Haleakala NP but it gets little cold up there pack a jacket. Oh yea there is Australian chick makes the best banana bread on right on the way to Hana.I loved it.
