My understanding is that the O2 sensors when activated close loop the fuel management system. They are online at warm idle. I've been told, don't know, that you can compensate for changed air intake by warming the engine enough that the O2 sensors reset the EMS.
When you where pulling that hill at 70 your system was open loop. Now the resistors might have changed your fuel /engine input some, but the pinging may be a clue that you are not feeding enough fuel to the engine.
The only way I know to get the best preformance from a stock engine is to open up the air intake, and install a descent fuel management system.
I know that the existing O2 sensors are there to satisfy the EPA. Their band is limited. And the closed loop system is not in place to improve preformance.

I had an 07 Ultra and had serious ping issues. NOTHING stopped it I finally took 2* out across the board above 1700 rpm with the power commander. End of problem.
Most of the Power Commander issues you "hear" are generated at the dealership shops selling Race Tuners. Before the SERT Power Commanders were the best thing since cat houses.
