Voltmeter reading with ignition on, but bike not running question
What reading do you get with the ignition turned on, radio off, bike not running? What reading do you see the meter drop to when you engage the starter?
I am getting a "delayed reaction" when I press the starter button, and I suspect my battery may be the reason.
I am seeing ~10vdc, and a drop to almost 8vdc. Since the battery is getting older, I think it's reasonable to begin there; and was curious if the readings I'm seeing bear this out.

James,
I wouldn't rely on the bikes voltmeter only. Get or borrow a good Volt meter and check around some more.
Check at the battery to see what you have and then start the bike and see if the volts go up.
Volts should go up to 13.9-14.1 or so...
And get that battery load tested down at the local Advanced Auto.

My battery's brand new. When the ignition's turned on lights on pulls the batt. down to about 11volts.when the motor cranks lights go out and drops down to 10-10.5 volts. If your's drops down to 8 it might be time for a new one if your charging systems working and your batt. getting completely charged.Have you left a charger on overnight with the same results?Could be something as easy as a loose batt. lug but if your batt. got some hours on it probably time for a new one.

When the bike is running, it's ~14, so I think the charging system is OK.
Same readings if I leave the battery on the trickle charger overnight.
Terminals are tight, so I am thinking a new battery this week.
Might as well kill 2 birds with one stone since I have to replace the tour pack latch that disintegrated as I opened it in front of the Harley Museum this weekend!
