What have y'all done.
I don't know what you mean by "useless" I use mine for several reasons.
If you don't need a 12v power sourse, then I can't help you I guess.

The owners manual says not to use the power outlet for anything but the cigarette lighter (of course it also says not to tow anything with the bike, but the local dealer sells trailers). The service guy says that he has seen a couple of melted plugs come in. Anyone ever heard of anything like that??

I wondered that too .. my truck has .. like .. 4 of those plug ins....Looks like cigarette lighters (with no lighters .. just caps) Who needs that many cigarette lighters? .... then .... I discovered I can use them for plugging stuff in and charging my phone. What a concept!

I think by "useless" he meant besides a cig lighter what else can you actually use it for. As per the owners manual - not to plug anything into it. Anytime I plug my GPS in, it blows a fuse. This is a common problem and there have been many talks on here about how to modify the wiring of the system. As it stands stock, if you are not a smoker it is pretty much "useless". It's not like a car lighter.

Ahhhh ... gottttcha! I guess if it's not wired for charging things then ... there is a flaw in THAT plan!
