I just received my HD chrome Stealth Detachable Luggage Rack from Zanotti's, and it has a sticker that says "LOAD CAPACITY 10 LBS MAX." The printed instructions sheet also says "Luggage Rack capacity is 10 lbs." I had planned to attach my Route 66 T-Bag with a duffle bag on top to this rack. Clearly, the weight is going to be over 10 pounds. I have the HD Two-Up Luggage Rack which handled my bags no problem in the past. However, I just looked at the instructions sheet for the Two-Up Luggage Rack, and it has the same 10 lbs capacity limit as well. Is this for real? There's not much you can carry on a week long trip that weighs ten pounds or less. Is this just HD trying to avoid liability from a bike accident claim relating to their luggage racks?
I only read the instructions because I couldn't believe the sticker that was on the side of the rack. I was twice as surprised when I did open the instructions, and saw the warning displayed there too. I'm certain the weight warning must be a cover your a$$ thing because I've seen many bikes with lots of luggage on their rack; and I've carried considerable weight on my other rack which turns out to have the same warning. My rack goes on my fender; but I'm wondering what sort of warning/capacity limitation they put on the King Tour Pack. I'll bet it's some ridiculously low weight limit too.
Nobody that tours goes by that rule. Of course I don't carry a scale with me but it sure feels like a loaded expandable t-bag weighs more than ten pounds.
