First Harley and it's a SG. I like the convenience of the hard bags and stereo but other than that I really don't understand this mystique with the H.D. brand. Don't get me wrong folks, I surely am not knocking Harleys but my previous metrics were good rides and very reliable. My last one was a Yamaha Raider "S" and prior to that two Road Stars and various Hondas and a BMW. Anyway, I do enjoy my 2010 SG.....

My first touring bike ever - 2010 ultra purchased Dec 24 2009. Had the perfect bike for me, 2008 FXD, but the wife hated it and pushed for the ultra. All i can say is in 18 months with the superglide I rode 24000 miles. The ultra barely has 3K on it. great bike for what it is but too much bike for me.

The only complaint is the gas tank which is a 6 gallon tank. Maybe in the design engineers dream. It will not fill very full and will not draw to fully empty. I was running on the low fuel light for about 15 miles when I pulled into Wall, S.D. and it only took 4.77 gallons. I think the best that can be drawn out of the tank is five gallons. The mileage was poor at an average of 41 mpg.
I also own a BMW and I recently read on one of their forums about a tank mod to one model which claims to increase tank capacity by over half a gallon. This involves drilling holes in the neck of the tank filler, to allow air out and gas into the upper-most part of the tank. We may be able to adapt that to these Harley tanks.
Pics are of the 'top plate' that hides under the console of every 6 gallon tank. The fuel pump and other stuff is installed on it, but as my bike is carb I don't have any of that to show you. First pic shows the plate with filler cap from above, second pic shows the bare plate from underneath. It is a single plastic moulding and the white parts you can see are an electrical connector and venting valve.
The 'BMW solution' I mentioned would drill 2-3 holes, say 1/4" diameter, in the filler neck close to the underside of the plate. They would best be in the gaps between the strengthening ribs you can see in the second pic. It may be a while before I get my own tank project complete to test this out, also I don't have any current experience of riding with it, but the more adventurous of you might like to see if it is worth doing!
