My thinking: it's a 1000 lbs of bike and rider (at least), on a 2 inch contact patch approximately the thickness of an inner tube! Is it worth it????
Why'd you bother cutting grooves in it anyway?
Not trying to be a total smart a$$, since I've ridden with guys with chords showing, just seems like your adding another element of danger.

You've been doing it right. Extra lubricant mixed in that way. Just gotta make sure those stray pubes get strained out first. They can cause a real nasty mess when they get caught between your teeth, in your gears, that is.

How do you know the grooves you cut won't actually hurt your wet weather performance by causing you to hydroplane? Modern tires are computer designed to ensure that doesn't happen. You could run the risk of altering this design and kill yourself. Doesn't sound like it's worth the risk. Spend the money and ride safe!
