Default Clean Oil Filter Change

Let me start by saying I am almost able to get it all in the drain pan. "ALMOST" is the key word.

I put aluminum foil up under the filter, I punch holes in the end of the filter at 6 and 12 to let it drain into a drain pan and then remove the filter.

But, with all that I still manage to run a small amount of oil down over the front engine mount every time I remove the filter.

Not much, but enough that I need to use some brake clean to clean it up.

Anyone figured out how to do a clean filter change with no oil running down?
I have it down to just a little running down, but my goal is none.

Is it possible????

I've tried the funnel, baggies, tin foil. Finally figured it out, keep a shop rag on floor and after the dripping stops, wipe down the motor mount.

I think you are right! Not a big deal cleaning up the mess. I just thought someone my know a trick or a product.

On my old evo I could do the filter change without a drip. Not on this one!

I don't worry about it. I usually time an oil change to be right before a wash job. After I take off the filter, I just rinse the area down with a good blast of WD-40. It cuts the oil and makes it drip off. I do the same thing even if she's not getting a wash. The oil still drips away.

I use an old "clorox" type bottle , the 1 gallon round with the molded handle in the side.
Put the bottle on it's side and cut the top half off almost to the handle.
Cut the whole base off at the seam.
Wiggle it under the filter and mark and trim it so it goes just past the filter base.
Back off the filter till it's hand tight , put the bottle under the filter , and turn it off and let it fall into the bottle , leave the cap on the bottle.(hehe)
Place something against the bottle cap so it doesn't slide out.( 2 by 4 from your last project).
Go eat lunch , it should have been pretty hot when you drained it .
After about a half hour , come back and finish up.
I put the bottle and the filter upside down on a screen on a drain pan and let them drain for a couple days.
Very little cleanup and a cheap , neat way to change the oil.

I've had real good luck with this 2 ltr pop bottle cut like this. I can work it all the way up and over the filter and big cut out gives me plenty of room to get the filter wrench on.

NOTE: If you have an oil cooler, take the time to remove the nuts holding it on to the bracket and pull the cooler up out of the way. Otherwise you will fill the fins with oil which will collect dirt later.

I always wash my bike after an oil change to get all the oil off the rubber mount. Otherwise the oil with soften the mount and shorten it's life.

I know this all takes time . . . but I like to work on my bike.
