Closed Loop Tuning

RE: Closed Loop Tuning
I decided I did not want to waste gobs of greenbacks on dyno tuning so I opted out for the Twin Tec TCFI II with Wego II on my '02 Ultra. (price is for whole setup from cyborgcycle for 625) I have been playing with changes on the bike and the Twin Tec keeps right up with me. (and it's really cool to monitor all those parameters as you ride! Almost make you forget to watch the road. )
I'm running mild gear drive cams, the Gerolamy dual flow throttle body and Rinehard True Duals.....well, that last item isn't true any more. I took the "mufflers" off of the true duals and threw them away, made up and stainless adapter and put the stock mufflers on the true dual head pipes. Then I started playing with the stock mufflers a bit. they are opened up a bit but no louder than they were stock.
While I did all this playing around the Twin Tec just learned and adjusted.
The Wego II uses 2 O2 sensors and works with the TCFI II. The Rineharts were advertised with twin O2 bungs but there is only one. I had to weld the second one on the rear cylinder pipe. What is really amazing is how different the front and rear cylinder are adusted and without the dual flow throttle body you can not balance things out completely. When I added the dual flow it was amazing the difference....and I bumped up to 46mpg! (I was getting a solid 42 stock)
Also, Gerolamy has a really nice package of their dual flow throttle body, high flow air filter plus the Twin Tec and Wego.
I've got about 100 hours on it now (yes,it keeps track of time and the amount of time spent at different rpms) and I've only had a few minor "hiccups" that were easily taken care of. The guys at Daytona have been great in taking the time to answer questions. (the questions were not as a result of problems but simply making sure I understood a few things better before adjusting a few parameters.)
Two thumbs up, five stars or whatever other scale you want to use. When you consider that other "controlers" band-aid the ecu and have to be tuned on a dyno ($$$) you will find that you are at the purchase price of the TCFI real quick.
Oh, and yes, it works with all the gadgets on the bike including the alarm system without problem.

fimduc, how much did you Fat cats cost? and was wondering were the O2 ports are located? Reason I ask is that the O2 sensors seem to stick out a good bit and was wondering about interverence. I'm planning on doing the closed loop thing myself and was going to lay down the foundation to make it as easy as possible when I do pull the trigger Great thread[sm=burnout.gif]

The bungs are 6 ~ 8" from each exhaust flange and point towards the left side of the bike. There will not be any interference issues with the probes on the FatCat..

RE: Closed Loop Tuning
As for the TFCI itself, the install is plug and play unless you are using the wego. Then you have to open the main connector to the ECU, remove two weather plugs and insert two supplied wires. Close the connector back up and you are ready. You can do it without tools although a tiny screwdriver works better than fingernails.
The only consideration on the TSSM is that it be DISARMED before you begin the swap. Anyone not being able to handle that shouldn't even be near a bike, right?
Yes, mine has the alarm and I use it virtually every time I get off the bike...sometimes in my own garage. (habit)

I suspect that once the TSSM has been mated to the orignal ECU it, can not be re-mated to a replacement H-D ECU but can be to the TFCI ECU. They most likely don't have all the propiatiary stuff H-D has written into the stock ECU to make it so with the TFCI unit!
Very Helpful thread.....
Again, Thanks Much

RE: Closed Loop Tuning
I'll have to do a bit of research but I believe that the TSSM is "imprinted" with the ecu "id" during arming. Thus ONLY THAT ECU can disarm the TSSM after that point.
Once disarmed, the ecu can be swapped and then when armed ONLY THE NEW ECU can disarm the TSSM. Disarm it again and swap again.
I've put my ecu back in twice while playing around with the TCFI when I first got it and the TSSM worked every time. Didn't even have to reprogram my disarm code. (you HAVE changed your disarm code from factory stock, haven't you? ...if not, just let me know where you park. )
BTW....no shop saw my bike. I did it all in my garage. (with duct tape, bailing wire, twine, gum, coathangers, ........ ) But seriously, the only "difficult" part has to do with the O2 sensors. Most pipes don't have O2 ports. This requires some planning, measuring, drilling and welding.

RE: Closed Loop Tuning
just wanted to update you on the Zippers Thundermax. I dropped the Thundermax in the system and the bike runs like it should've in the beginning without any tuning at all. Just the basic set up and off I went. The base map is very solid and the support for the questions I had due to my lack of knowledge was outstanding. All the little nagging problems I had after all the dyno time with the PC III and such are gone. I have my fatcats with the o2 bungs in and I'm on the list to get the closed loop when it comes out. I'm sure the closed loop will make it better but I sure don't know how.
I can see why they give a 30 day money back. They don't really expect anyone to actually give it back and I don't blame them .

RE: Closed Loop Tuning
I was looking at the Daytona Twin Tec website the other day and noted something interesting. Under "Links" there is a pull-down menu of distributors. Zippers is listed there with "private label" in parenthesis. I wonder what Daytona Twin Tec product they distribute under a "private label"?
