Took the course last year also, practice before you get their. As said, friction zone is key to being able to navigate the drills. But head and eye movement, and knowing where to look is as important. Dont care how proficent you are at the friction zone, if you dont get your head and eyes around and focus on where you are going next, you wont get their. If your eyes look down.....thats where you will go.

Has anybody here tried the course with 16" apes and, if so, how did it go?

I highly recommend you go to the Harley MSF courses. Riders Edge and the Skilled riders course. i went to both and loved the training. i will be going back to the skilled riders course once a year just for tune ups on my riding skills

Our riders edge basic course did u-turns in a 20' box and RLP use's a 24' With my bike not the course's a 20' u-turn is easy
