Default High Idle

I have a 1995 Ultra Classic 1340 cc FI. While riding into work on a cool morning the engine would not idle back down while deaccelerating. IT maintained 2500 RPMs. Rolling on throttle did nothing. Had been riding for about 8 miles without a stop at 50 MPH. Dealer unable to diagnose problem. The bike has 22,000 miles. Any ideas?

One of two things...The fast idle actuator has gone bad and stuck. Mine did that twice and I finally adjusted it to where it does not work. You don't need it. Alll it does is hold the throttle open a bit to give a fast idle on cold starts. You can do the same thing with your throttle tension screw. The second thing is that it simply lost the correct hot idle setting. This happens every now and then with a MM system. Over 10 years, mine has done it a few times. Resetting the idle is not that hard.

Try removing the two fuses in the right side cover that go to the ECM for about 30 minutes. Then replace the fuses. With the Run/ Stop switch at RunTurn key switch to ON for 5 seconds. Turn to Off for 10 seconds. Then back to On for 5 seconds, and back to Off. That should reset the idle. You can also try cleaning the Idle Air Control unit that is on top of the throttle body with a little carb cleaner. Going through the same thing myself.

mine to , one thing I did find out is that if I hit the kill switch and then start it back up it seems to reset so I do think mine is electrical and not a mechanical problem . talked to dealer they thought it might be a vacume leak or need a programer and a run on there dyno bout $700 but would not pay someone to put my bike through that , runs great other wise

Remove the air cleaner and clean the idle motor plunger with carb cleaner. Turn power on and off while spraying. Catch excess carb cleaner with a rag.
