Default Help..Ignition switch removed but bars not in the right place.

So I'm changing out my bars and I get to the part where I need to remove the lower fairing. I realize that I have to remove the ignition key to do it. Nuts I say cus the bike is up on the lift. Call a buddy over to pull the bike off the lift so I can turn the bars to the left lock as per the SM. Buddy says hold on just take it out like this and proceeds to take the ignition switch out with the bars straight forward. Mmmmmm interesting I say because the SM says nothing about doing it like that.
However, now I cannot get the ignition switch to work. I get it back in but it can now pop out even without the key in it and I can turn it to all the positions but no power goes anywhere so I cannot start the bike. Just for info its still on the lift and I haven't moved the bike at all.

How do I get the ignition switch back in and working properly?

Thanks

You may need an ignition switch alignment tool, although some have had success lining everything up with a long flat bladed screwdriver. It doesn't matter that the bars weren't at full lock left, I've had mine off several times and never paid attention to that.

Try the search feature. There was just a great thread on this and a link to a video a member made on how to remove and install the lock.

take a long flat blade screwdirver and click it around back to the left until everything lines back up. It may a take a few tries depending on how far your friend got it turned to the right. I did the same thing myself and it took a few tries to get everything back to working.

Here's the video.

I used a piece of 5/16" copper tubing about 8" long.
Put a 90 degree bend at the end and smashed the other end flat for about 4" long to make the tool.
This way you can realign everything easily if it gets misaligned.
I just keep it in the tourpack for future projects , it worked great when I did the passing light mod last week.
Hope this helps.
