There went my planned trip ..... I may have a major problem

This sounds like the best plan. Just make sure the service writer knows you are going to wait for it.

I am stuck on site in Finland, my bike has 550 miles and is booked for 1000 mile service on Thursday, I --mmmm --- fly back to UK tomorrow night (stopping in Helsinki) and need to put 500 miles on in 2 days in between meetings as I catch ferry on Saturday morning to go on tour to Ardenne Belgium (Band of Brothers country)
That was all "do-able" until....this f$& King volcano decided to play its game again.
Never mind, we will both be on tour!!!

"No Way!" from the mgr. "Bet you a free service" replied my friend. Mgr.."You're on!"
Mid-day the next day my friend arrived back at the dealers with 985/990 on the speedo. He asked the mgr if he wanted him to go get the other 10/15 miles....... He got the service free.
Of course he didn't have a volcano in the way......

Switch
Before you get too crazy about it, I would take the right handlebar switches out, disconnect the starter button and turn the kill switch back on.
I might be wrong, but the only thing I can think of that would cause the starter to engage, but the kill switch can still shut off is the starter button. If it was the solenoid, the kill switch wouldn't stop it.
Should be a very simple fix.

One of my Wide Glides had the same problem, turned out to be the switch on the bar. I too noticed a noise when I was riding as the starter kept trying to engage. I pulled the wire plug off the starter and rode it home. The dealer had it fixed in no time. The bendix and ring gear were fine.
