This sounds like the best plan. Just make sure the service writer knows you are going to wait for it.

Perhaps a starter ring gear? My Bud has an 09 ultra and his was bad and he had to have it replaced. Warranty stuff. Might be a place to start?

That was all "do-able" until....this f$& King volcano decided to play its game again.

Never mind, we will both be on tour!!!
A friend of mine in New Jersey picked up an '08 Road Glide late in '07. As he's checkin' it out & gettin' ready to leave the dealership he told the service mgr. to schedule him for his 1000 mile service. "When do you think you'll be ready?" asked the mgr. "Tomorrow" replied my friend.

"No Way!" from the mgr. "Bet you a free service" replied my friend. Mgr.."You're on!"

Mid-day the next day my friend arrived back at the dealers with 985/990 on the speedo. He asked the mgr if he wanted him to go get the other 10/15 miles....... He got the service free.

Of course he didn't have a volcano in the way......

Before you get too crazy about it, I would take the right handlebar switches out, disconnect the starter button and turn the kill switch back on.
I might be wrong, but the only thing I can think of that would cause the starter to engage, but the kill switch can still shut off is the starter button. If it was the solenoid, the kill switch wouldn't stop it.

Should be a very simple fix.

You may very well be right but the noise I heard while the engine was running had to have cause some damage to the starter or the ring gear. I don't think there's any need for me to do any troubleshooting even though your suggests may discover the problem that caused it. Hopefully I can get it into the dealer tomorrow if I can find a trailer.

Did yours do it while you was riding or when you got ready to ride after having your scooter parked for a while?

yeah they sound like hell when that happens, just like the others said unplug it from the solenoid and it won't do it any more. when you need to start it just touch it back on the solenoid connection. Had the same thing happen and it was the starter button.

One of my Wide Glides had the same problem, turned out to be the switch on the bar. I too noticed a noise when I was riding as the starter kept trying to engage. I pulled the wire plug off the starter and rode it home. The dealer had it fixed in no time. The bendix and ring gear were fine.
