Question Stage one from HD vs.......?

I have a 2010 Ultra Classic, stock as stock can be and I want to add stage one with slip ons, AC and tuner. The local HD dealer will do VH basic slipons for $387 installed. Then they want $679 for the SE Race Tuner with a dyno tune not to mention an AC on top of that. It seems a little high to me. The manager I talked to said that they prefer that tuner. Now I bought an extended service plan with the bike and am comfortable with them doing the scheduled maintenance.

I have a quote from FuelMoto for Jackpot dyno tuned slipons, PC-V and AC for $600. This seems to good to be true! Now will i have to expect to take my bike in for some pulls on a dyno after I install everything?

A bit of a quandry!!!

Here is what I am trying to accomplish. Better sound, performance and lower the heat. I just rode to San Diego and back last weekend and the engine was hot!!! I know the cat has a lot to do with that, but I don't really want to change headers until the warannty expires. It may not be a problem, but I don't want to chance it.

Ideas any one?

The canned map will be really close to ideal and you wont need to go through the extra expense of the dyno pulls. Down the road, if you choose to do more mods (I tried to lie to myself saying I wont), you can add the autotune modules and still wont need the dyno tuning. I can get one dyno pull in my area for one hours labor if I want to satisfy my curiousity. I progressed from adding stage 1 (SE slip ons, SE A/C and a stage 1 download), added a powercommander III usb, then changed to a SE heavy breather intake, Rinehart slip ons, then added SE 204 cams and popped for the PCV w/autotune. Next is the D&D fatcat, 106 kit and some mild port work on the heads. The autotune will work with every upgrade. I like to do most all of my own maintenance. That could be the difference.

The 2010's have the cat in the header so until you change the header pipe its going to run pretty hot. 4-5 months ago FM posted temp measurements on the 2010.

FM sells stage 1 stuff and stand by their products with very good customer service. I bought both stage 1 kits from SE. No problems with there either. The package deal from FM is hard to beat. There is nothing hidden there. If you are close to FM, you may want to think of taking your bike there for them to add the parts and tune your bike.

As for the slip ons its really personal preference on sound. Most of them will perform better than stock. Adding an ECM will allow you to add more fuel to the bike which will cool the engine, but that Cat in the header....

FM is a good company. I have the jackpots with their stage one. The FM air cleaner provides a K&N filter. This is superior to Harley's paper filter. The jackpots at idle are deeper and not much louder then stock. When you give them some throttle they sound great. FM appears to purchase the same modules as Power Commander.
Check out the FM site. A little locktite and a couple new muffler clamps and your set to go.
You mentioned cooler. The stage one will help that. More air and gas into engine. Also, what oil have you been runing. I brought my temps down significantly by getting the syn 3 out and now use Mobile 1. Carbon buildup will raise the heat.

The FM Stage 1 kit made a difference in the heat on my 2010 Ultra - and I chose to keep the original headpipe w/CAT. Much better...

The map that Fuel Moto includes is close enough for government work where you won't need a dyno to tune the bike. Every bike requires a slightly different tune but Fuel Moto has done extensive testing on the dyno to develop the Jackpot mufflers using the products sold in their power package so a lot of dyno time has already been spent on the dyno to come up with the map. Most people on this forum use Fuel Moto's canned map and don't take the bike to a dyno. If you get it and are not satisified with the map then you can either have it dynoed or buy the auto tune modules. IMHO you are better off with Fuel Moto's canned map than a dyno tune from a dealer if the tech running the dyno doesn't know what he's doing. On the other hand a dealership should have enough dyno's on your particular set up where he should have a pretty good base line to begin with and only needs to tweek for your particualr bike, but looks like they charge for a full dyno to run up his profit. Either way you go you should see a big improvement in heat and performance.

These are just my opinions and are probably worth what you paid for them.

Get the fuel moto. I crashed my bike last year on wet leaves, and during the rebuild got the HD stage one air cleaner, streetwalker bagpipes without o2 sensors and a fuel moto pcv.
I just called fuel moto and told em what I was runin and had a pcv in less than a week.
Bike runs great, spark plugs look good etc. Could I gain a couple of horse power/torque from a dyno tune? More than likely yes, but the straight out of the box setup from fuelmoto is more than adequate.
