Therein lies the real question.
Not something that comes easily. However, if you do, there are some really cool patterns u can do with the lacing/spokes.
usually it is cheaper and easier on your head if you just pay for some pre fabbed ones. or hire someone that knows what they are doing to do something special for ya

When I was a young lad I worked in a bicycle shop and built many a wheel from scratch. My advice would be to leave it to a professional. First of all you need a truing jig, and they don't come cheap. Secondly, your first few wheels will never be as good as someone who has experience and has done it a bunch.
