Default Got new cams today

I bought a set of SE-255 cams today from a guy here on the forums. They came out of a 2010 SE street glide and only have 436 miles on them. I think I got a great deal for only $125 shipped. They should work well with my SE air cleaner, SEST and thunderheader. Anyway, I called the dealer to get a quote on installing the cams, Torrington bearings, adjustable pushrods and dyno tune. They quoted me $1000 and some change is that way too much? I was a little shocked they wanted that much. They said it's a 9 hour job! They did say I could set in on the dyno tune but is this too much $? Should I check around and get more quotes or does this sound about right?

The cams are around 3 hours at most dealers. You need to be sure they have a good tuner. I wasted a whole summer last year getting my bike tuned and retuned 5 times before my stealer got it right. Dyno is at usually 3-4 hours.

If you separate out the dyno time you would be a couple hundred cheaper in regards to the cam install. It cost me $1400 for a stage II 103 kit with the 255's installed including tax. They used my pushrods because the heads had to come off. New tappets, bearings, gaskets, etc. I already had the SE AC and a PCV so no dyno tune just a Fuel Moto canned map as I had bought the PCV from them last June. Based on what I paid last February at a HD Dealer, it seems a little high to me.

Shoot, I want some 255s for $125 Shipped! Thats a great deal!

Back to the subject; ever thought about getting a PCV from fuelmoto with their map and attempt the install yourself? Thats what I'm doing...

Atrain68 has an awesome write up on how to do it. Does not look difficult!

Just paid 135.00 for mine shipped. My dealer is a 5 hour job @ 65.00 and hour plus install kit. However doing it myself I will have a whopping 185.00 into it.

+ 1 on doing it yourself. If you've got decent mechanical skills, a manual and tools (the usual assortment + torque wrenches & Torx bits) it really isn't too hard to do. I put in SE 255 cams, new bearings, adjustable pushrods & added the autotune setup to my PCV with a total outlay of about $700.00. That price included the cams, bearings, pushrods, Autotune modules, all the gaskets & small parts plus a bearing removal tool and cam gear locking tool.

If you do decide to do it make sure you have a buddy handy to help put the exhaust back on. I spent way too much time trying to do it myself. Finally gave in and called a friend. With his help it went back on in minutes.

A friend told me to get the SE premium tapered quick install adjustable pushrods for extra clearance at the cylinder head. He said there is a kit with these pushrods and new pushrod tubes that come with them and the tubes had a longer top piece (the piece that pops out of the pushrod tube that has the screwdrive slot in it) and it makes adjusting the pushrods easier. I can't find the kit in my SE catalog. Anybody got a part # for this?

Not necessary. The SE255's are true bolt-in cams. You would use the adjustables if you want to eliminate the hassle of removing your rocker components. Reusing the stockers only adds a couple of hours to the job, but once it's done it's done and you save ~$150.

The SE tapered adjustables are #18404-08. Most people are using these.

BTW, great catch on those cams for $125 shipped. FWIW to those looking for some, you can often find these on Ebay and they usually go for about $150-175 used, a bit more new. I was lucky and bought mine for $110 shipped, but that was a year ago before the word got out on these cams. They're much more well-known today.

I paid $175 plus $10 shipping off ebay a month ago so I think you got a great deal. Watching at the time seemed like $155 was the best I saw (missed) and most went $175 - $200.

Try and read iclick's and atrains great install write-ups about 3 or 4 times and you will probably decide to do the switch yourself.

Check the want to buy section here on the forums. A guy who goes by texasbowhunter has a set he says only have 150 miles on them and he's asking $165.
