Not sure what temp the oil breaks down, but I can tell you what temp the bike runs sluggish and pings like crazy. Doesn't want to crank ect...

I ride in Daytona year round. I feel the cooler is worth it because you add more oil to the system. Run Amsoil or Mobil 1 type oil also helps. I am usually in the 220 area and will peak up to about 260 stuck in traffic, which I really try not to get into. I had a fan but really didn't like it much, looks, broken mounts and super hot air on my right leg.

Be Safe JIM

sounds like you need a crotch cooler ..easy to install and you can bling it out if you like..They work and they work very well ..Try it for 30 days and if you are not completely happy send it back for a complete refund..

I did the 103" over the winter with cams and head work,I normally run around 185 degrees on the road and in traffic it will climb to 230 to 250 pretty quick and i notice it wants to stumble on take off but no pinging yet. Will be looking into a cooler.

was the fan you had one of the smaller Leanle units or the larger HD unit. I heard about them breaking off at the mounts, or breaking the mounts.

Went to the East side Orlando Harley dealer today. Outside air temp was probably low 90's. When I pulled into the dealership I checked my oil level and temp on the digital gauge. It read 216 deg F, which for as hot as it was I din't think was too bad. I was on a 45 mph four-lane road for about 3 miles prior to pulling in so it was getting air across the motor. I have a bone-stock 2007 Ultra-Classic running Mobil 1 Synthetic in the motor. I know everyone complains how hot they are, but in an air/oil-cooled motor you should feel a lot of heat off that bike. Means it's doing its job abd shedding that heat. Just like in my Porsche, I watch the temp gauge really close if I have to idle for any length of time on a hot humid Florida day and I shut it down a lot of times just to ensure it doesn't get too hot.

Oil temp of 250° may be "expected," but it is not "fine." All TC engines need an oil cooler, IMO, and since HD doesn't elect to install one from the factory it is our task to add it later. I have the HD Premium and my oil temp peaks at about 200° while moving along in summer weather, up to as high as 230° in traffic, although it is rare for it to go this high. These are manageable oil temps, although I would prefer them even lower at around 180-225°.

If you have a PCV you can add a map switch and toggle between two maps, one for mileage (leaner) and another for cooling (richer), and that's another step I've taken to control oil temps. These two items plus running synthetic oil keeps my engine's temps in control.
