Default Can't get rid of the backfiring.

Got a SERT, had it dynoed and tuned numerous times put quiet baffles in, new gaskets, everythings tight but no luck! I've got 21000 miles on it now and had it since 17000. It has had this issue all along. I'm wondering if having the 25000 mile service a little early will help any. Just spent around $1000 just trying to get rid of it and nothing seems to help. Seems to get worse as motor temp rises. Thanks

Could be exhaust leak or running lean I would consider fuel management system if exhaust is ok. Fuel Moto is a sponsor here and could hook you with a power comander. I had a Fuel pac on my Ultra and had decel popping never could resolve it until I got the power commander which came with a canned map. No more popping and runs stronger.

It would seem your dyno man should have been able to determine the issue.

First off he already has a fuel management system, the first line in his post says he got a SERT. So there is NO need to get a PC as it won't do anything more for him than what he already has.

If what you are referring to as backfiring is happening when you let off the throttle and it pops as the engine slows down that is what is referred to as decel popping You can do a search here and find tons of threads on the subject. In a nutshell it is raw fuel escaping out your exhaust and burning on the mufflers. It can be tuned out and is relatively easy to do. It can also be caused by an exhaust leak, check your exhaust bolts first.

I just put on brand new exhaust manifold gaskets and tightened them down to the point I was affraid of stripping or breaking them. I have Vance and Hines Big Shots which are one piece so no leaks there. Yes it is popping on decel, but dealer(dyno man) seems to think it's normal but I find it annoying and embarassing. When some of your bikes did this did it seem to get worse after the motor heated up?

Mine does the same thing. Had it dynoed Aug 09 and lived with until I noticed it now starts to sputter when I twist the throttle after decel from high rpm's to low rpm's. If I decel into a turn and then twist the throttle I consistently get a sputter or two. I can get up to about 50mph in 4th gear then decel down to 20 and it backfires, I then twist the grip and it sputters before getting up to speed.

I have an appt with dyno next week to look at it. I also read on here someone with the same problem had a cracked in the crossover. May take a look at that.

I have V&H true duals, no crossover. But it also did it when I had factory exhaust that had crossovers with SE slip ons. Thanks for all the opinions and ideas. Any more?

Many have increased the fuel by 5 or 10% on the zero throttle column and successfully eliminated or reduced the decel pop. I believe the changes should be 1750 RPM and up.

Increasing fuel will only make it worse, need to go the other way.

Run it up to red line and let off, watch the tach when it pops, if it only pops at say 4500 you only need to remove fuel at 4500. If it pops from 4500 down to 2500.........you get the idea. Just remove 5 units at a time. It usually doesnt take much.
