Twin Cams before the hydraulic tensioners needed to be checked way
before 43,000. I heard of pieces of tensioner shoe getting into oil
passages creating engine knock before failure. But I think everyone
knows that.

Maybe we need a thread where everyone posts when their bike didn't break that day?

Of course, I believe "If it ain't broke, take it apart to find out why?"

As much as they cost you'd think they would go at least 100,000 mi. but I guess the UNION wants them to fail so they can build more new ones. When it's fixed I'm selling and purchasing an EVO.
Are you an idiot or what the Union has nothing to do with design, they put build them the way the way the blueprints are written

The Union didnt design the Pinto,Vega,Edsel.or the Toyotas for God sakes read a book

Well, without union negotiated wages, they wouldn't cost $20K. Thanks UAW!

The early cam chain tensioners were crap. Did you ever pull the cover and look at yours? I'm sorry your bike needs repair, but you can make the most of it. All mechanical things need maintainance from time to time. Do as some other have suggested and take the opportunity to do some upgrades.

Good luck, get'er done and get back on the road.

Not gonna speak to the union issue, not going there. But think about it -- a Harley engine is aircooled, pulling close to or more than a half ton of metal and flesh at 70 -- 90 mph down the road day in and day out with better mileage than most compact cars.

Considering the fun and returned love a Harley gives the owner, I sure don't have a problem with moderate maintenance. And a Honda would be a better bike for you probably. (And, pssst!!, I 101 percent support the unionized workers of H-D.)
