I know what rotors are, but what are floating rotors?

I have them on my bike below. If you look at stock rotors they are one piece. Floaters are not one piece, they are but they are not. There are spacers that connect the hub part to the actual rotor. Provides isolation and reduces noise. I've heard they stop better but I couldn't explain why. I did it for looks and to stop the squeel.

below is a link to my rotors. There are 10 spacers that are between the actual part the pads grab and the part that connects to the bikes wheel.
