power commander and fuel mileage
#12
My stage 1 carbed Wide Glide consistantly got 34-35 and I babied it. My Ultra is stage 1 with PCIII USB, stock pipes, Rinehart slips and an SE AC - I get between 36 and 40 and I baby it too. I would be happy to get 50, but I just don't see that happening. I am getting ready to pull the stage 1 but leave the slipons to see if I can even notice a power, mileage and rideability difference. I am a very mellow rider so I am guessing I won't notice anything, but who knows.

When my 2000 FLHTPI was stock other than Samson fishtail slip ons and SE air cleaner, and a PCIII with a canned map that was close to the above, I would get 45-48 mpg. After going 98" cylinder kit, 10.5:1 compression, head porting, V&H duals, and custom mapping of the PCIII on the dyno, the mileage dropped to the mid 20s. Well, could not live with that, so I went into the PC map and dropped 10% fuel across the board to lean it out. Then I retarded the ignition 3 degrees to compensate so the engine doesn't ping under load or acceleration. Regained some of the lost fuel mileage. I now get between 36 to 40. Not great, but I can live with that as a trade off for the improved performance.

I have a 00 RK with V&H True Duals, stage one and power Commander. I'm getting 38 MPG on third tank of gas since owning it. Most of my friends get 45-50 on their electra glide with out power commander. is 38 a good number with PC, or should I be getting better. Dealer said its good, but does seem right compared to others. I'm new to Harley and PC just curious what you are getting with PC. Does PC make that big of a difference to justify the lesser MPG. Thanks for your help!
Also, if you have the HD Stage 1 download make sure the PC map you have installed is configured for that, not a stock bike, as that may make a difference in mileage.
What probably happened is your dealer installed a PC map obtained from DynoJet, and they tend to be very rich in the cruise range. If you post your map table(s) here we can give some specific advise on how to tweak it for better mileage.
Getting better mileage is a double-edged sword, and the trade-off is heat. More mileage usually translates into more heat, so where your sweet-spot is is up to your own interpretation.
I've spent quite a bit of time tweaking my PCV (now with Auto-Tune), and before it the PCIII, and my mileage varies wildly depending on conditions. In city I'm lucky to get 38mpg average, but on the highway I can do as well as 50mpg, usually more like 46-48mpg, however, with the E10 gas we have in this area. I'm at the point where I concede that I can't do any better with this bike and am leaving good-enough alone. This bike runs very well, gets reasonable mileage, and I'm relatively happy. It's just that my old carbed Evo RK routinely got city mileage in the mid-to-upper 40's and highway mileage in the mid-50's, so I became spoiled. The writing on the wall is that a TC will never do this well, so I've given up trying. One person's level of satisfaction won't be the same as another's, more than likely, so you must learn to tweak the PC and find that sweet-spot for you.

00RKVT, your mileage does sound low. My 2004 RK has a big air cleaner, big mufflers, Andrews 21G, and a PCIII. I had the bike tuned at Rob's Dyno. She's making 84# of torque, and getting 44 mpg on back roads (lots of 3, 4, 5 gear).
My carbureted 883 Sporty (all stock) would often get 60 on the highway (mpg, not mph smartasses)
Those are real numbers, measuring how many miles on the odometer, divided by how much gas to top it off again. The odometers were accurate too, no BS.

Have her tuned
I'd send her out for dyno tuning, and have a custom advanced map made just for your bike.
