Std. Road King & Classic have passenger footboards instead of pegs, both a have detachable windshield, both have passing lamps. Classic has spokes and inner tubes, Custom and Std. are tubeless. Classic has cruise control.
Classic = Gangster whitewalls, Std. = skinny whitewalls, Custom = boring blackwalls.

Its hard to beat the Road King. If you dont like the standard seat I changed mine to the Sundowner touring seat and my wife really enjoyed the seat change. I decided this time to get an Ultra this time.

I have a 06 RK Custom and totally enjoy it. I bought it to ride to work and a weekend cruiser. I have no doubt it will take me anywhere I want to go no matter how far. The stock seat had to go. I am 6'1 and put a sundowner on with a backrest and it makes a world of difference for the better. When I put my solo seat on, it is like a totally newbike. The sundowner moves me up toward the tank some which I do not care for. With the solo seat I move back enough where I cannot use my highway pegs to give you a idea. The hard leather bags on the custom are a joke to me so I changed them out. They do not lock and the latch is on the inside so your helment will not fit easly but will go in. The bike is a inch lower from the other kings. I had the smooth Laced spokes put on it. I have the detachable windshield but do not use it for the most part. The custom looked good to me right off the floor. I did add the matching passenger floorboards and moved the pegs up to my highway pegs to match.
I ride the on weekend tours all the time with no problems. Smooth as silk on the interstate at any speed

I made the same move that you are considering, I went from a 03 springer softail to and 05 R.K. I love the Road King, Its a nice touring bike that you can still pack alot of stuff on for the weekend trip and still remove the windshield for city cruizing and get some wind in your hair. I have give some thought to a new street glide but not sure if I am ready for the fairing or not. The R.K. is a time proven bike with a good history, you cant go wrong.

Loved my Heritage Softtail, but you'll not beat the RK when hitting the highway for real!
