You should do exactly like the manual says because you will get cooties if you don't!

I usually change the drain plug as well. Change the pan every 20k just in case.

I change O rings every time I change a fluid plus wrap plug with teflon tape. Such cheap insurance.........

I replace after about 5 changes depending on condition. Always use high temp thread sealant. No leaks as of yet. Just go get a few to have on hand, if you want or need to change it no problems.
