go get a strap wrench.I think i got mine at NAPA but they are sold everyware.keep those chanell locks for plumbing work and away from your bike. lol slip a piece of tihn cardboard like a pasta box over the oil cooler
Couldn't use any of my strap wrenches on my 2010 Ltd with oil cooler. Works fine on my 2001 Softail tho'.
K&N filter and a piece of plastic cut from a windshield washer bottle to slide under the filter, the oil runs down the plastic to a pan under the bike.
Make sure you get the plastic piece completly under the filter housing. No mess !!
i found with the tight fit do to oil cooler that the real cheap HD metel belt one with ratchet hole works best and as mentioned before watch oil gettin on the fins(collects dirt) and motor mounts(deteriorates them). after all done with oil change I spray the area with degreaser and wash the bike.
I use a regular oil filter socket from advance. I just keep it at a slight angle to stop the socket from getting stuck behind the crank angle sensor. Works well
Never had much luck with the slipping something under the filter to prevent a mess.I have some brake cleaner on hand that works good on that stuff. You only want the California approved, everything else works too good.
Harley makes a" socket" wrench that fits on the end of the oil filter. You will need a couple of extensions for your ratchet. I also cut a cereal box and bend it in half. Slide that under the filter and all the oil will run into a pan on the floor. P.s. the wrench is slotted. You can only make 1/4 turns at a time. You will know what I mean when you try it, works slick! Good luck.
Same trick here - been doing the folded cardboard thing since my ironhead! Still get some oil on the motor mount and oil cooler but rubber friendly brake cleaner and some degreaser whose name escapes me at the moment takes care of the residual.
