Default Maybe I've Been Lugging It All The Time

OK, today the group went on a 200 mile ride. As usual, when we started out it was cool, around 60 degrees, and the bike ran great. After lunch when it was in the 80s, the pinging started. We don't ride interstates so our trip was on two-lane state highways. Usually we cruise at around 60-65 mph. I have a 110 cu. in. screamin eagle engine and the owners manual says to shift into 6th gear at 60 mph. So I have been doing that and as long as we're cruising on flat highway no pinging. The pinging starts when I give it some gas going up inclines. Well today I decided to leave the bike in 5th gear on the return trip. The tach hovered at around 2500 to 3000 rpm. There was no pinging in 5th gear even when I goosed it a bit. I'm now questioning the owners manual recommendation of shifting into 6th gear at 60 mph. I'm thinking the 6th gear is primarily for interstate riding at speeds over 65 mph and I've been experiencing the pinging because I have been lugging the engine. Do you agree with my assessment?

I don't have the 110 engine, but I can tell you 60 MPH going up a hill is lugging your engine. Were you riding solo? If so that's way too slow for 6th gear. I try to keep my RPM's around 2500 in all gears, If I'm two up, I keep it between 2500 and 3000. no pinging!! I don't go to 6th gear until 70 mph.

Sounds right to me. 6th at anything less than 65 (faster if in a headwind) doesn't feel right. These motors typically like the RPMs to be over 2500, especially if you start twisting the throttle. Keep in mind how much weight you are pushing on the Ultra, fuel quality, heat, and increased compression on the 110, the low RPM load is a recipe for pings. FWIW as always.

I don't use 6th gear untill cruise gets set at 75. I don't have a tach so I can only go by "feel".

What I am not sure I understand is the reason behind the SE110 and you are ridding around @60mph in sixth gear, not to bash but why would anyone pay for the performance if you do not use it?
