So again, also with BMW it's relative
You are right, R 1200 GS also gives you good buffeting on a windy day, but for me and my girlfriend it’s oasis of piece compared to Ultra. I have not given up, though, because even that horrible eyballs-rattling didn’t stop me from wanting the damn Milwaukee ingot badly.

BTW: Like you, I am European, which means I ride a lot faster on motorway than most people here and wear a full-face helmet.

@ JCleary: you are very right, but also in the case of BMW things are relative so it seems. Both i and my brother in law drove a R1200GS. I myself did sell it again after experiencing unsolvable buffeting on my helmet (we need to have a helmet by law). I experimented also with different shields. Here is a pic of an Ultra with these deflectors on. They've been cut in length to look less ugly (they still are in my opinion), but you'll get the idea.

French, do the fork mounted wind deflectors work as good cut as they would not cut???????

Brockstwrt has the correct answer. Harley use to put them on their bikes as
standard equipment. I put mine back on after adding an oil cooler. you can
put on all the different windshields you want but this one item will solve your
problem.

..... this is another of the factors in why the RG fairing works so well w/ lowers, it's built to settle right down above the top lip of the lower fairing, so there's less turbulent air being forced thru the space between the upper & lower and onto the rider.

..... we give up a little 'hands on grip' coverage when it's cold out, but battery powered gloves take care of that.

It sounds like the consensus is that those ashtrays do not help on any of the 09 or 10 touring frames. They only helped with the older frames with the 5 gallon tanks.

At least that is what people are saying.

Good info. I put a clearview 19" trying to get rid of the buffeting. It helped. But not all the way.
6'5" tall
