Seeing you're going through a derby cover gasket anyway I'd suggest taking the time to adjust the clutch. And while you're adjusting the clutch might as well lube the cable. The service manual calls for SuperOil (94968-85TV) that seems to be discontinued. The replacement is HarleyLube 94968-09. I like using Motion Pro.

I'd say to be sure and loosen up (or break free) those derby cover screws BEFORE draining the primary.

Now would be a good time to switch to synthetic. Many of us here swear by the Redline products. If you buy a powerpack from them, you get everything you need PLUS a funnel. I continue to buy from this company because they have a good price and fast shipping.

I know this reply is simply personal preference and there will be others who will disagree; but, when I had the 1,000 service done on my 09' RG I had SE SYN3 put in all three holes. I was amazed at that difference it made after only 50 miles. Not only is the engine quiter sooner after cranking, finding neutral and shifting is much more precise (imho). According to the service manager, there must be a reason they put SYN3 in the SE/CVO bikes.

I have to agree with BigBen. It seems to run cooler also. Just don't overfill it like I did

just be aware the manual says 4 qts for crankcase. i never get more than 3.5 in mine and i have a cooler. (of course it does not drain at time of oil change.) just add 3.5 qts and check, then warm it up, check again. plenty of rags, turkey pan, and cut a plastic 2 liter coke bottle to slide under filter before you loosen it. it will catch most of the oil....good luck....

Default oil filter

K&N oil filters help out alot they have the hex on the end so no need for an oil filter wrench makes life alot easyer. Old paint roller tray works great for the oil catch since the bikes sit low to the ground.
