Default Abus Detecto 8000 X-Plus Review

Yeah, I know...if they want it they'll get it - but to deter the general idiots and for at least some peace of mind, I purchased an Abus 8000 disc lock.

I like finding "real" reviews of products before I buy, so I thought I would help others and post my own.

After some research I knew I wanted a disc lock with an alarm - mainly to prevent me from forgetting to remove it before riding away and jack'n up my rotor/caliper or dumping the bike. I originally was going to get the Xena disc lock but read many accounts about consistent false alarms. The reviews of the Abus did not include problems with false alarms - in fact it was mentioned that it takes a good amount of movement to set it off.

Well, first, this lock is very hefty - 3.5 pounds of stainless steel. It has a high security rating and is made by a very reputable company. The alarm is not embarrassingly loud (when you forget to take it off) and the sensitivity is perfect. I have not had any false alarms. IT IS EXPENSIVE THOUGH! It is sold for as much as $250 but I found it on EBay for $189....still expensive, but worht it "to me" I would recommend this lock.

Thanks for the review. It looks like a substantial piece of hardware. Posted is a link to a Youtube video of the Abus 8000. I agree that it doesn't seem to be embarrassingly loud but will get the attention of any bystanders. First hand reviews, good and bad, is one of the things that makes this forum such a valuable resource. It has cost me some money but surely save me much more by helping to make informed decisions as to what to avoid and where to avoid purchasing from.
